Catching Sunrises – gigapixel landscape photography

Gigapixel landscape photography is my new passion. Since I was little I always loved mountains, forests and trees, as much as I loved photography. In these days I am lucky enough to live in the south of Germany, a beautiful area where the landscape is fabulous. Beautiful locations such as the Eibsee lake or the Karwendel Natural Park are just a few hours drive.

Gigapixel landscape photography – behind the scenes

It is not a simple job to capture the beauty of impressive creations of nature. The dimension, size and greatness of a mountain make it quite challenging to shoot a good panorama photo. Gigapixel landscape photography is a new trend but it takes a lot of planing. You need not only adequate equipment, but the best possible weather conditions. Add to that persistency, patience and a good physical condition.

At a starting point I would not be the right candidate for this job. I am not so patient. In the last months I haven’t done much sport and I do not like waking up early. On the other hand, these are exactly the points that I want to improve. So I decided to use photography, my passion, to motivate myself to change something in my life. This was the starting point of a long term project that I named “Catching Sunrises”. As the name says, this project is about waking up in the middle of the night, driving to some fantastic location and capturing the first natural light. For such shootings I combine my Sony camera with a panoramic tripod head. Every time I catch a sunrise I feel that nature embraces me.

The scenario that I chose for my first shooting was the beautiful Eibsee lake (link) which lies at the base of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. It was summer time and I arrived there around 4 am. This is the hard part of catching sunrises, you have to get up and be there long before they show up!

This shooting was commissioned by an architecture company in Munich. For this job I had to travel a bit further, more exactly to the Karwendel Natural Park (link) in Austria. I was given the coordinates of the location and the indication to bring back an amazing picture. It was a hard job from the beginning because I had to climb my way to the top carrying up the heavy equipment. However at the end it was totally worth it because this amazing sunset was waiting for me.

While being there I revitalized myself, breathed the fresh air and enjoyed the nature. Afterwards I came home with a great feeling. I am so blessed.

Below you can see details of the “making of” in Eibsee lake and the final result.
